Traveling Companions: Faithful and Hopeful
The people we journey with matters. Isn’t it true that our traveling companions flavor and even shape our lives with the outpourings of their hearts?! Reading through Pilgrim’s Progress with my kids has recently compelled a belief that we all need a Faithful and a Hopeful to journey with.
Is Everything Going Your Way?
It doesn’t matter how many times you tell your kids how they should respond in life when they don’t get their own way if you aren’t modeling it.
A Few Favorite Phrases – For the Kids
We’ve developed a few favorite phrases that we say a lot. This is especially helpful when you have boys that don’t have capacity to listen to mom offer a sermon… My word capacity is not their word capacity.
The God Who Sees
All over scripture we see the phrase “looking at them,” or “turning his gaze towards them,” or when Jesus saw…” We know one thing for sure, Jesus did not avoid his people. Maybe you wonder at his interest. Maybe you aren’t sure where you stand before him. Maybe you aren’t sure he would look directly into your eyes if given the choice, so it may be of interest to see some examples of a variety of people he engaged. They are imperfect. So are we. He is still looking.
Daughter of The King
You are a daughter of the King. And that will only move us to the degree we have wrestled with what we believe about our Father. So what does it mean to be a daughter of the king? Because we will not access what we don’t know is ours to claim. Do you know who you are, who is accessible to you and what is yours to claim?
Comic Relief
I have found that I do life best when I can interrupt the challenging moments with moments of lightheartedness. It doesn’t make the tough moments go away, but it makes them easier for me to deal with. I don’t know what your year has looked like, but if you could use some comic relief, let me tell you a little story about camping / canoeing as a family. Memory making at it’s height.
They Still Know His Voice
We may wonder at His command to “Be Still” long ago. Today, the winds and the waves, they still know his voice. They still obey his commands.
Word Study: Redeem
The ultimate redemption in Christianity is Christ’s sacrifice – described really eloquently in Hebrews 9. But even within the Christian faith, the depth and complexity of redemption find their origins far earlier than Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.
Don’t Ever Think What You Do Is Ordinary
When we value strong character in our households, we contribute to having a lasting impact on not only our child, but also on the world around them.
The Greatest Attempt — Reflections from Iceland
Even in the most glorious expression of beauty, our greatest attempt at life at it’s fullest measure falls decisively short of the fullness of being known, of being satisfied in, of being comforted by the creator of our hearts and the one who delights in us.
When I Don’t Understand
I know that God is good. I know that he is brilliant. Brilliant. I know that he has eyes to see things we are not privy to. That he creates and restores, has plans and pursues. I also know that terrible tragedies and severe mercies exist. I know that while God has great plans for us, he also allows painful circumstances to play out. And somehow all of this can be true at the same time. Even though sometimes I don’t understand what his plans are, or why he allows it.
Lament
While the depth of grief experienced varies widely from one person to the next, it is remarkably democratic in its presence across the spectrum of humanity. We all experience grief to some extent – some of us more than others. But what do we do with it? Where do we put it? On occasions where grief’s downpour overcomes our capacity to contain it, how do we enlarge our soul to hold grief’s waters?
